Additional information about Glades Grove from the book "Mundle's Choice".
The land South of Carmichaels towards Waterford (Pierceville) or present day Ceylon,
PA being nearly level was known as The Glades because of the variety of trees, the swampy condition of the land, and the bushes, etc., growing there. Strange looking oak trees not seen in this area grow here. The writer mentions
"The first 35 years of my life I lived on Ceylon Road. The area called "The Glades". To this
day strange vegetation grows there. Somewhat tropical looking Cedar Willow trees, skunk cabbage, and oaks not seen in the area." The red ozier dogwood famously grows here. The stems of the plant made good use in the construction of canes.
The road from Lisbon (Carmichaels) to Waterford (Pierceville/Ceylon) was built of
corduroy logs. The land was so swampy that a dirt road would sink a wagon. The logs
elevated travelors out of the more wet areas. The early settlements in this county were not built in The Glades, but made on the hilly land near that swampy sections especially to the North and East. In "The Glades" pioneers would build campfires to light up the night sky so children could play, while older folks sat around and talked. It was talked about being the most beautiful place on earth being surrounded with densely wooded large oaks. This area was just a short walk near the "Alarm Post". The glades Church was built nearby just up the hill and at the top of the hill to the East of this location was the areas first trading post.
